'The Americans' Star Matthew Rhys Jokes He Knew Trump-Russia Scandal Would Happen
The actor, a guest on Monday's 'Late Night With Seth Meyers,' also recounted his nerve-racking experience sitting next to Michelle Obama at a White House state dinner.
Russia's possible interference in the 2016 presidential election, and investigations thereof, have made FX's Cold War spy drama The Americans particularly relevant in recent months.
But, in an appearance on Late Night With Seth Meyers on Monday, star Matthew Rhys joked that he knew, back when he was considering taking a role on The Americans, that five years later there would be allegations that Donald Trump colluded with Russia.
Talking about how perception of the show has changed in light of the Russia scandals, Rhys said, "A lot of people go, 'Did you know?' And I go, 'Yeah, of course we knew. That's why we wrote this TV show.'"
He continued, joking, "Five years ago we knew this was going to happen. We got a tip, we got a video tape of Big Donald in Moscow and we said, 'That's what we should be doing.'"
That wasn't the only bit of political humor Rhys dished out. The actor, who had a memorable (and Emmy-nominated) guest appearance on HBO's Girls last season, also talked about sitting next to former first lady Michelle Obama at a White House state dinner.
Pointing to a photo Meyers presented of him dining with Obama, Rhys said he was in the middle of shooting his Girls episode, and sporting the same hairstyle and beard that his character did, or as Rhys puts it, he's in "full pervert look."
"That look alone is basically the part I played in Girls, of a sexual predator," he added.
The actor also recalls a nerve-racking experience with a tomato appetizer.
