Angelina Jolie Files for Divorce From Brad Pitt
The two were married in 2014.
Angelina Jolie has filed for divorce from Brad Pitt, citing irreconcilable differences.
The AP reported that Jolie's attorney Robert Offer said Tuesday that she'd filed for dissolution of the marriage, with a decision made "for the health of the family."
The actress is asking for physical custody of the couple's six children, according to TMZ, and her legal filing lists the date of separation as Sept. 15.
"I am very saddened by this, but what matters most now is the wellbeing of our kids. I kindly ask the press to give them the space they deserve during this challenging time," Pitt said in a statement to People.
TMZ, which has a close relationship with divorce attorney Laura Wasser, is reporting the well-known lawyer is representing Jolie. Wasser also represented Jolie in her divorce from Billy Bob Thornton.
TMZ adds that the decision to divorce has to do with how Pitt is parenting their children and that Jolie is upset over his methods, but there's no outside person who contributed to the move.
Jolie and Pitt married in August 2014 after a nearly 10-year relationship. The couple, who were together since 2005, made their engagement official in 2012, when Jolie began wearing an engagement ring that Pitt helped design.
Earlier that year, Pitt told THR that he and Jolie did hope to get married, for the sake of their children.
With their children, homes in the U.S. and France, and the Jolie-Pitt Foundation, the pair has much at stake. Under California law, only assets acquired during their marriage must be split equally, said Los Angeles divorce attorney Peter Walzer. Forbes magazine estimates the pair earned a combined $555 million since their relationship began, with pre-tax earnings of $117.5 million since their 2014 marriage.
The couple, who famously starred together in 2005's Mr. and Mrs. Smith, reunited last year for By the Sea, which was a commercial and critical disappointment. Pitt previously was married to Jennifer Aniston for five years.
Jolie previously was married to Jonny Lee Miller and then Thornton. Each of those marriages lasted three years.
Pitt will next be seen in the Robert Zemeckis film Allied, opposite Marion Cotillard, which is set to hit theaters Nov. 23. He's also a producer on The Lost City of Z, starring Charlie Hunnam, which is expected to be released in the spring of 2017, and he's an executive producer on Moonlight, which is set to be released Oct. 21.
