The CW's Kids' WB! has picked up a new Spider-Man animated series to launch in early 2008.

Tentatively titled "The Amazing Spider-Man," the series hails from Culver Entertainment, Sony Pictures Television's recently launched division focused on developing and producing drama, comedy and animated series exclusively for DVD and international distribution.

Unlike most series developed by Culver, "Spider-Man" will air on television before being released on DVD and other digital platforms.

The new animated series picks up the original Spider-Man mythology at the beginning, when the web slinger is a not-so-typical 16-year-old entering his junior year of high school.

"The addition of 'Spider-Man' bolsters a lineup that has proved to be the Saturday morning destination for kids seeking action and adventure in the most amped-up ways," said Betsy McGowen, Kids' WB! senior vp and GM.

Greg Weisman is the series' supervising producer. Victor Cook is producer/supervising director.

"Spider-Man is such an important brand for Sony Pictures, and we're thrilled to keep the momentum going by taking it back to television with an animated series on Kids' WB!" SPT co-president Zack Van Amburg said. "It's also an excellent way to launch Culver Entertainment, our newest tele-vision company."
