Apple Sets 'Carpool Karaoke' Premiere After Delay
The spinoff of the popular 'Late Late Show With James Corden' segment was originally scheduled to bow in the spring.
Apple has set a new premiere date for its Carpool Karaoke spinoff series after delaying the show's spring release.
The program is now set to debut Aug. 8 on streaming service Apple Music.
Carpool Karaoke, which will expand the popular segment from CBS' The Late Late Show With James Corden into 16 half-hour episodes, will pair celebrities as they drive around town together. Corden is expected to appear in an episode but will not host the series, which instead will feature celebrity pairings including Shakira and Trevor Noah; Game of Thrones stars Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams; Queen Latifah and Jada Pinkett Smith; John Legend, Alicia Keys and Taraji P. Henson; and Miley, Noah, Billy Ray and the entire Cyrus family.
Corden will be paired with Will Smith and LeBron James for separate installments.
The series was first announced in July last year and was planned for a spring release. But in late April, Apple canceled a party tied to the show's premiere and a spokeswoman said that it would be released "later this year."
Produced by CBS Television Studios and Fulwell 73, the production company of Late Late Show executive producer Ben Winston, Carpool Karaoke is part of a original programming push at Apple, which has been looking for music-related series and specials to bulk up its Apple Music offering. The company is also planning the launch of Planet of the Apps, a competition series featuring mentors including Gwyneth Paltrow, Jessica Alba and Will.i.am. Apple had said that Planet would debut this spring, but has yet to announce a premiere date. Dr. Dre, who along with Jimmy Iovine sold headphone company Beats Electronics to Apple in 2014, also has a semi-autobiographical drama in the works with Apple, which has yet to confirm its plans for the project.
When Carpool Karaoke premieres, it will be made available to subscribers of Apple Music, which costs $10 per month. New episodes will be released every Tuesday.
