Art Basel: This Is Miami's Coolest New Hotel
Everyone from supermodel Linda Evangelista to designer Cynthia Rowley descended on the Miami Beach Edition Hotel, which hotelier Ian Schrager describes as "a sort-of red-light district, but legal."
Partygoers who are old enough to remember will always recall the moment when Ian Schrager changed Miami Beach forever with the arrival of the Delano Hotel. So when it was announced that Schrager would kick off Art Basel with a party this past Tuesday night at his new hotel, The Miami Beach EDITION, it was immediately understood that the spot would become the place to be seen for the whole of the art fair.
And indeed, on Dec. 2, with co-hosts W Magazine’s editor in chief Stefano Tonchi and Parisian-based nightclub Silencio, a who’s who of media, members of the art community and celebrities descended on the grand opening night of the Collins Avenue hotel for cocktails, dinner and dancing.
Linda Evangelista, Ann Dexter Jones, Cynthia Rowley, China Chow, Chelsea Leyland, David Schwimmer, Hannah Bronfman, Harry Brant, Athena Calderone and Jennifer Fisher, joined art notables Yvonne Force Villareal, Ryan McGinley, Tracey Emin, Marina Abramovic, David Maupin, Rachel Lehmann, Lisa Phillips, Hope Atherton, Lola Schnabel and Kehinde Wiley in launching the grand space.
Absolut Vodka made a special cocktail for the evening, the Eden Fizz mixed with apple cider, and dinner in the Jean-Georges Vongerichten restaurant The Matador Room featured sweet pea guacamole, tuna tartare, grilled Maine lobster and tres leches chocolate fritters.
The outside pool areas, with winding paths through palm trees, created a Havana-inspired backdrop for British musician Blood Orange’s ethereal post-dinner pop tunes, which floated hauntingly through the swaying palm trees. “Isn’t this so tropical?” mused Angela Mariani, a partner of C & M Media. “It’s about story-telling and being the first to break the rules," declared Stefano Tonchi as he made his way across the covered veranda greeting guests.
Though the hotel is a brand partnership with Marriott through Schrager’s current company Ian Schrager, revelers would have been hard-pressed to picture this as any other Marriott around the world. The 294-room hotel includes 70,000 feet of beach front, a bowling alley and ice rink.
For those who found it too windy in the evening air — this year’s Basel seemed to be characterized by gusty wind — at 11 p.m., the Silencio nightclub popup opened to professional disco ice skaters executing Olympic-salchows to Donna Summer’s "Last Dance." “This is the Cutting Edge version of Studio 54,” joked one partygoer.
“It’s a sort-of red-light district, but legal. This picks up where Studio left off, a visual riot, sensory overload, a truly serious dance club," said Schrager. “There's nothing else like it on the beach or anywhere else.” Attendees clearly agreed; Evangelista made a second appearance the following night for the Ferragamo-hosted cocktail for W’s W Stories book party.
