'The Artist' Dog Goes on British Press Tour
Uggie appeared on BBC News and "The Graham Norton Show."
As the Awards Season continues to shape up, it’s become clear that the silent, black and white film The Artist is a very strong contender.
But one of the film’s stars, Uggie, may never receive any accolades for his scene-stealing performances. That hasn’t stopped him from going on a U.K. press tour to spread the word about the film, directed by Michel Hazanavicius.
PHOTOS: Oscar Dog Showdown: Who's Cutest?
The 9-year-old Jack Russell terrier appeared on BBC News and The Graham Norton Show. BBC's David Sillito sat down with Uggie, who showed off some of his best tricks, from speaking to performing a death scene. Sillito also talks to trainer Omar von Muller about the rogue Oscar campaign to get the dog an actor, insisting that the dog is really acting. As the interview goes on, Uggie can be heard snoring as he takes a little nap on camera.
Uggie, who also had a role in Water for Elephants, did receive the Palm Dog at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival, and an honorable mention at France's Lumiere Awards, but the pooch will probably never get his paws on an Oscar.
STORY: How Rin Tin Tin Ruined Any Oscar Shot for 'The Artist's' Jack Russell
Currently, there are no Oscars for dogs, due apparently to Rin Tin Tin. In the book Rin Tin Tin: The Life and the Legend, Susan Orlean writes that in the first year Oscars were awarded, "according to Hollywood legend, Rinty received the most votes for best actor. But members of the Academy, anxious to establish the awards were serious and important, decided that giving an Oscar to a dog did not serve that end."
Uggie is one of the many dogs who took on starring roles in this year’s awards film. Other four-legged thespians include Cosmo from Beginners and Hummer from Young Adult.
