Tom Ascheim, GM of Nickelodeon Television, has been named CEO of Newsweek, replacing Richard Smith, who is stepping down after serving as editor-in-chief for nearly 24 years and CEO for 16. Ascheim, a 17-year veteran of Nickelodeon and Viacom, joined the network as its first business development executive in 1990 and worked his way up the ranks. Sources said there are no immediate plans for Ascheim's replacement. In his new role, he will report to Washington Post Co. vp and Newsweek managing director Ann McDaniel. Smith, who is stepping down at the first of the year, will retain his chairman title.
