Ashton Kutcher, Justin Bieber 'Swatting' Calls Lead to Boy's Arrest
UPDATED: The juvenile is believed to have made false reports of violence at the stars' homes, prompting police response.
A Southern California juvenile has been arrested for allegedly making prank calls that reported violence at the homes of Ashton Kutcher and Justin Bieber, leading officers to respond to the stars' homes.
The Los Angeles Police Department would not provide details about the suspect, only confirming that one juvenile had been taken into custody. In a Los Angeles Times report, the publication refers to the suspect as a boy.
The juvenile in question was arrested on Dec. 10 and is no longer in custody. The Associated Press reports that prosecutors were reviewing a possible case against the suspect, who police say may be responsible for multiple "swatting" instances -- a term that refers to prank calling with the intent to draw large police responses, including specialized SWAT teams.
"The swatting practice is extremely dangerous and places first responders and citizens in harm's way," police said in a press release. Multiple agencies have been involved in the investigation, including the FBI and Long Beach Police department.
Police also said that the juvenile had called in via an electronic system to report that multiple people had been shot in Kutcher's home on Oct. 3 and that shots had been fired in Bieber's home a week later. Neither Kutcher nor Bieber were home at the time, and officers determined that there were no injuries sustained.
The person is also suspected of being involved in additional "swatting" incidents, but police did not say whether they involved celebrities. Similar instances have been reported recently involving the homes of Miley Cyrus and Simon Cowell.
It is not clear what sort of charges the juvenile could face if prosecuted.
UPDATE: According to LAT reporter Andrew Blankstein, the suspect is believed to be 12 years old.
