Asia Television cuts 16 staffers

Broadcaster blames global financial crisis

HONG KONG -- Broadcaster Asia Television laid off 16 production staffers to ease pressure brought on by the global financial crisis, an ATV executive told The Hollywood Reporter on Tuesday.

The network increased its headcount from about 900 to 1,100 during the past year for the transition to digital broadcasting and coverage of the Beijing Olympic Games.

"The layoff is a pre-emptive move to deal with the effects of the financial crisis we foresee in the coming year," said Kwong Hoi-ying, ATV senior vp program, corporate development and external affairs.
