Assembly approves runaway production bill

The state assembly has sent to the Senate AB 1696 – after 51-17 approval, with Paul Krekorian (D-Burbank) leading the floor debate – that would provide financial incentives to halt runaway production of films and commercials. The unfunded measure, which would create a grant program through the California Film Commission, would require separate funding legislation or a line-item inclusion in the governor's next budget. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has said he regretted the failure of film incentives measure AB 777 in the last legislative session, but he hasn't stipulated what steps he would be willing to back to see an incentives plan through this session.
