AT&T's Pay TV Service Adds Fewer Subscribers in First Quarter
U-Verse signed up 200,000 customers to reach a total user base of 4 million.
Telecom giant AT&T on Tuesday said it added 200,000 subscribers to its pay TV service U-Verse in the first quarter, a slight slowdown from the year-ago period.
That brought its user base to 4 million. In the year-ago period, the company had added 218,000 video customers.
Last week, Verizon had also posted a slightly lower subscriber gain for its FiOS TV service in the latest quarter as compared to the first quarter of 2010.
The two telecom giants are opening the latest quarterly earnings season for pay TV operators.
AT&T also added 718,000 net U-Verse broadband users to reach 5.9 million customers. And it activated 4.3 million iPhones.
Overall, AT&T reported a first-quarter profit of $3.6 billion, compared with $3.4 billion in the year-ago period. Revenue rose 1.8 percent to $31.8 billion.
