Audiences still cry for 'Mamma'

Woody Allen's 'Barcelona' is tops in its Spanish debut

Universal's "Mamma Mia!" continued its remarkably fruitful overseas run during the weekend, claiming the No. 1 spot for the third consecutive frame with an estimated $14 million from 4,359 screens in 48 markets.

The international tally for the feature adaptation of the stage musical now stands at $334 million. Combined with its domestic take, "Mamma's" global boxoffice total comes to $475 million.

An otherwise somnolent weekend overseas saw several titles play single markets or on limited runs. The best of the lot was Woody Allen's comedy "Vicky Christina Barcelona," which opened via Warner Bros. in Spain to an estimated $3.2 million from 333 sites for a per-screen average of $9,610.

Diane English's comedy "The Women" finished at No. 3 in the U.K. with an estimated $1.1 million in its second weekend at 370 situations for a 10-day cume of $4 million. Disney's release of Miramax's Holocaust drama "The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas" raised its U.K. market cume to $2.3 million in 10 days.

While Paramount's "The Love Guru" finished out of the money in its France opener (the Mike Myers comedy placed 26th there), Disney's "Un Novio Para Mi Esposa" finished its sixth weekend in Argentina with a market cume of $4.7 million. Fox's "Arrancame La Vida" finished at No. 1 in Mexico, accumulating $4.6 million so far from the market.

Ranking No. 2 on the weekend was Universal's "Wanted," which grossed $11.6 million from 2,627 screens in 34 markets for an overseas cume of $172.1 million. A first-place Japan bow provided $7.7 million from 322 situations.

Third was DreamWorks/Paramount's "Tropic Thunder," which tallied $8.1 million from 1,649 spots in 26 markets. The Ben Stiller satire finished first in the U.K. ($4.3 million from 461 spots), Germany and Austria. Its overseas cume stands at $29.1 million.

The No. 4 finisher, Pixar/Disney's "WALL-E," passed the $200 million mark overseas (its cume is $200.1 million) thanks to a $6.6 million weekend from 2,702 screens in 37 markets. No. 1 openings in New Zealand and Australia ($3.1 million from 260 locations Down Under) set the pace.

With a domestic gross total of $220.1 million, "WALL-E" has taken in $420.2 million worldwide, with its second phase of international playoff commencing with openings in German-speaking Europe and Turkey this coming weekend.

Sony's "Hancock," which rounded out the top five titles, pulled an estimated $4 million from 678 screens in its second Italy weekend, lifting its overall weekend take to $6.1 million. The Will Smith vehicle has accumulated an overseas tally of $387 million.

In France, Studio Canal's "Let's Talk About the Rain," director/co-star Agnes Jaoui's comedy-drama, opened at No. 1 in the Paris area, and looks to collect an estimated $2.5 million from the market overall. Opening No 3 in Paris and its environs is Touchstone/Focus Features' "Dan in Real Life," a 2007 romantic comedy with Steve Carell, which looks to register an estimated $1.5 million from the market in total.

Other weekend action: Universal's "The Mummy," $4.1 million from 53 markets, cume $276.5 million; Warner's "The Dark Knight," $4 million from 58 territories, cume $455.7 million; Sony's "You Don't Mess With the Zohan," $3.4 million from 40 markets, cume $90.2 million; and Sony's "Step Brothers," $3 million from 15 territories, cume $15.6 million.

Other international cumes: "The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian," $277.6 million; Sony's "Pineapple Express," $8.4 million; Warner's "Get Smart," $95.8 million; Paramount's "Angus Thongs and Perfect Snogging," $12.5 million; Warner's "Star Wars: The Clone Wars," $28.7 million; DreamWorks Animation/Paramount's "Kung Fu Panda," $408.2 million; Universal's "Hellboy II: The Golden Army," $59.7 million; Fox's "Babylon A.D.," $9 million; Fox's "Meet Dave," $33.4 million; and Fox's "Mirrors," $11.9 million.
