Australian Prime Minister Mocks Trump in Leaked Audio
Malcolm Turnbull mimicked the president at a private event for local media at Parliament House.
Strewth, this is awkward.
Footage of Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull comically mimicking President Donald Trump at a private event has been leaked by Nine Network's 9News.
Turnbull was speaking at a closed-door media event at Parliament House on Wednesday and adopted Trump's mannerisms and catchphrases. Turnbull began by describing his face-to-face meeting with Trump in New York last month. "It was beautiful. It was the most beautiful putting-me-at-ease ever," he said complete with Trumpian hand gestures.
Turnbull also talked about his poll numbers while channeling Trump. "The Donald and I, we are winning and winning in the polls. We are winning so much, we are winning, we are winning like we have never won before," he said.
And the Aussie PM also found time to sneak in a sly joke about Russian help winning elections. "I have this Russian guy … Believe me, it's true, it is true."
Turnbull's relationship with Trump famously got off to a rocky start. In their first telephone conversation together, the president allegedly lambasted Turnbull for a refugee deal between Australia and the U.S. struck by the Obama Administration and then described the conversation as "the worst call by far" on a day he had spoken to a number of world leaders including Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Both the White House and Turnbull's team played down reports of tension, but the Australian leader faced more derision at home after his first face-to-face with Trump. At that May meeting in New York, Turnbull was left waiting for three hours, as the president stayed in Washington trying to push a controversial health care bill through the House.
