Average Movie Ticket Price Falls to $8.08 in Third Quarter
The price is down from the $8.33 second-quarter average, but up compared to the $7.84 average in the third quarter of last year
The average cost of a U.S. movie ticket fell slightly in the third quarter of 2014, to $8.08, compared with an $8.33 average in the prior quarter, according to the National Association of Theatre Owners.
That's a 3 percent drop from the second-quarter average, but it's not unusual to see a drop-off from the second to third quarter of the year as the rollout of big 3D summer titles slows toward the end of summer.
The 2014 Q3 average is, however, higher than the $7.84 average from the third quarter of 2013.
Guardians of the Galaxy was the highest-grossing film in the third quarter, earning $326.7 million domestically. The superhero space film is followed by Dawn of the Planet of the Apes ($208.2 million),Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles ($189 million), Lucy ($126.1 million) and The Maze Runner ($86 million).
