Average Movie Ticket Price Jumps to $8.17 in 2014

The figure marks an all-time high for the yearly average.

Amid a box-office slump, the average price of a movie ticket jumped to $8.17 over the past year, a slight rise over the 2013 ticket average. The figure also marks an all-time high for the yearly average. 

The price of a ticket in the fourth quarter of 2014 was $8.30, according to figures reported by the National Association of Theatre Owners on Tuesday.

That figure marks an increase from the third quarter of last year, when $8.08 was the cost of an average ticket, but a slight decline from the $8.33 average ticket price in the second quarter of 2014. 

The average ticket price in the fourth quarter of 2013 was $8.35, and the yearly average was $8.13.

Domestically, the top three highest-grossing films in 2014 were Guardians of the Galaxy (current total: $333 million), The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 1 ($332 million) and Captain America: The Winter Soldier ($259 million).
