Babelgum to cover Spirit Awards red carpet
Made available for the web and on mobile devicesLONDON -- Web portal Babelgum will be bringing the glitz and glamour of the red carpet from this year's Spirit Awards and carry archive footage to a global audience after striking a deal Monday with Film Independent, the non-profit arts organization that produces the Spirit Awards and the Los Angeles Film Festival.
Babelgum said the red carpet walkups and a selection from the awards' 24-year archive would be available on the web and via its free application for Apple's iPhone and iPod Touch and Google's Android devices.
The parties said the deal marks a first for an awards show by making archival content and red-carpet footage available exclusively through mobile smartphone devices.
"We are so excited that Babelgum has taken on the enormous task of helping us share these funny and touching moments with film lovers all over the world," said Film Independent exec director Dawn Hudson. "There are countless hours of footage that no one has seen, as well as clips that will stir up fun Spirit Award memories for those in the independent film community."
Karol Martesko-Fenster, svp and general manager of Babelgum's Film Division said: "We are thrilled to be working with Film Independent on this historic occasion, the 25th anniversary of the Spirit Awards, premiering exclusive retrospective footage and never-previously-aired segments from this prestigious event via our online and mobile platforms.
The 25th Film Independent Spirit Awards are scheduled for March 5, 2010 at LA Live's event deck in downtown Los Angeles.
Starting on Feb 1., over 140 clips dating back to 1986, will be available through the Spirit Awards channel at www.spiritawards.com and at www.babelgum.com/spiritawards and via the Babelgum mobile phone apps www.babelgum.com/mobile.
