BAFTA to Kick Off ‘Life in Television’ Event Series With Julie Walters
'Billy Elliot' and 'Mammi Mia' star will the first subject of the new series
Julie Walters, the multi-BAFTA-winning actress with almost four decades of appearances on U.K. TV and film, will be the star of the first in a new live series from BAFTA entitled 'Life in Television' , to be held in London on Dec. 3.
Alongside renowned film roles in titles such as Billy Elliot, Mamma Mia, Calendar Girls and seven of eight Harry Potter titles, Walters is much-loved in the U.K. for her television appearances, in particularly alongside comedy actress, writer and director Victoria Wood in shows including Dinnerladies, Wood and Walters and Patt and Margaret.
She picked up an International Emmy for best actress in 2009 for Simon Curtis’ TV film A Short Stay in Switzerland, and in 2006 came fourth in a poll by U.K. broadcaster ITV of the country’s 50 Greatest TV Stars. Walters was named a BAFTA Fellow earlier this year.
"We’re delighted to be launching a new strand of television events, BAFTA A Life in Television, and doubly delighted that Julie Walters, one of the U.K.’s most celebrated performers, has agreed to be our first subject," said BAFTA Television Committee chair Andrew Newman in a statement.
"Each event will create the opportunity to hear first-hand from a major creative force within television, and to celebrate their career and showcase their body of work. We are aiming to produce three each year and look forward to announcing further names for 2015 shortly."
