'Battleship' Sinks Competition to Top Disc Sales Charts
"The Hunger Games" fell to No. 2 and "The Lucky One" debuted at No. 3.
Universal Studios Home Entertainment scored a victory with Battleship the week ending Sept. 2, topping VideoScan’s First Alert sales chart, which tracks overall disc sales, as well as the dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart.
The sci-fi actioner, which grossed a modest $65.2 million at the domestic box office, knocked The Hunger Games to the second spot after two weeks at No. 1. On the Blu-ray chart, Battleship outsold Hunger Games by a 2-to-1 margin, with 61% of its sales coming in the high-def format.
Among other newcomers on First Alert, Warner’s The Lucky One debuted at No. 3 and Sony Pictures’ Think Like a Man came in at No. 4.
In all, 10 of the First Alert top 20 were new releases, and five of those were TV shows new on disc, led by the second season of “The Walking Dead” at No. 5. “Walking Dead” fared better on the Blu-ray chart, with the second season at No. 3 and the first season reappearing at No. 20.
