Bee Gees' Robin Gibb Wakes Up from Coma
The singer "confounded" doctors as he is now breathing on his own and able to speak to his loved ones.
Bee Gees star Robin Gibb remains in intensive care after waking from a coma, his doctor said in a statement Sunday. The singer, 62, has advanced colorectal cancer, and had recently caught pneumonia because he was weakened from chemotherapy and two operations.
Gibb is "fully conscious, lucid and able to speak to his loved ones," his doctor, Andrew Thillainayagam, said in a statement.
"He is breathing on his own, with an oxygen mask. He is on intravenous feeding and antibiotics. He is of course, exhausted, extremely weak and malnourished. Our immediate goals are to ensure that Robin's swallowing mechanism is safe enough to allow him to eat and drink, and that he recovers enough strength to breathe effectively, without needing high levels of oxygen by mask."
Thillainayagam added Gibb's recovery confounded him, saying, "It is testament to Robin's extraordinary courage, iron will and deep reserves of physical strength that he has overcome quite incredible odds to get where he is now."
When Gibb fell into a coma three days ago, "I feared the worst," Thillainayagam said. "We felt it was very likely that Robin would succumb to what seemed to be insurmountable obstacles to any form of meaningful recovery. As a team, we were all concerned that we might be approaching the realms of futility."
"The road ahead for Robin remains uncertain but it is a privilege to look after such an extraordinary human being," Thillainayagam concluded.
Robin's wife, Dwina, and three children have been at his bedside every day, talking to him and playing his favorite music for him.
Together with his brothers Barry Gibb and Maurice Gibb, Robin Gibb has sold more than 200 million records worldwide as the Bee Gees. Robin has been hospitalized several times in the past year and subsequently canceled a tour in Brazil, BBC reported.
Robin's brother Andy Gibb and twin brother, Maurice, died in 1988 and 2003, respectively.
