'Bees' the buzz of Image noms

Fox Searchlight's "The Secret Life of Bees" leads the film nominations for the 40th annual NAACP Image Awards.

The drama earned eight nominations, including outstanding motion picture. In that category, "Bees" will compete with "Cadillac Records," which picked up seven noms; "Miracle at St. Anna"; "Seven Pounds"; and "Tyler Perry's The Family That Preys."

Perry, who will co-host the awards with Halle Berry on Feb. 17 from Los Angeles' Shrine Auditorium, also figures prominently in the TV categories, where "Tyler Perry's House of Payne" leads the list with six nominations.

On the film side, the best actor lineup consists of Derek Luke ("Miracle"), Don Cheadle ("Traitor"), Jeffrey Wright ("Cadillac"), Rob Brown ("The Express") and Will Smith ("Pounds").

Nominated for best film actress are Alfre Woodard ("Family"), Angela Bassett ("Tyler Perry's Meet the Browns"), Dakota Fanning and Queen Latifah ("Bees") and Rosario Dawson ("Pounds").

In the category of independent motion picture, the nominees are "Ballast," "Noah's Arc: Jumping the Broom," "Rachel Getting Married," "Slumdog Millionaire" and "The Visitor."
