Belgacom locks up soccer rights

$69.7 mil deal nets three seasons

BRUSSELS -- Telecoms group Belgacom on Tuesday secured the broadcasting rights for Belgian top-flight soccer matches for three seasons in a 44.7 million euro ($69.7 million) deal.

The package is worth 25% more than the 36 million euros Belgacom paid three years ago, but less than the 50 million euros the professional football league, Profliga, was hoping for. The Jupiler League matches will continue to be broadcast digitally on Belgacom TV, available on high-speed Internet.
