Benicio Del Toro, Emily Blunt Highlight HFPA Party Toasting Miss Golden Globe
The president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Assocation tells THR that the event was nearly canceled due to the recent tragedy in Paris.
Corinne Foxx called it a “coming out party” of sorts, like “a debutante ball or something.”
And it’s easy to see why the 21-year-old USC senior would relate the pomp and circumstance surrounding Tuesday night’s tag-team Golden Globe Award Season celebration thrown by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and InStyle (and presented by FIJI Water) to traditional affairs. But few debs can claim to have been introduced in front of a throng of photographers, followed by a parade of press interviews and a glitzy party featuring A-list stars from both big and small screens.
That’s exactly what Foxx experienced when the HFPA officially announced her as Miss Golden Globe 2016 outside Ysabel on Fairfax Avenue. “It’s definitely nerve wracking because I haven’t done the red carpet thing by myself or held my own like this,” laughed the daughter of Golden Globe winner Jamie Foxx. And she couldn’t even ask anyone for advice. “I haven’t been able to tell anyone and I’m so bad at keeping secrets. Thank God I actually did this time!”
The tradition, which dates back more than 50 years, casts a showbiz offspring to assist in doling out Golden Globes on stage during the HFPA’s annual telecast. Corinne Foxx follows in the footsteps of Anne Archer, Melanie Griffith, Laura Dern and Dakota Johnson, and she also has aspirations to take their lead (and her dad’s) and segue into acting. “I could’ve just graduated from high school and gotten into acting but I wanted a college degree, so I’ll just do acting after I graduate,” admits the student and sometimes model who recently posed for a Ralph Lauren campaign. “My dad has been super supportive because I think he really wants me to get into acting. But any decision I make, he says, ‘You’re right. Do whatever makes you happy.’ ”
Jamie Foxx looked happy escorting his daughter Tuesday night down a particularly packed carpet. Why so? Because this long list of attendees: Benicio del Toro, Sir Ian McKellen, Emily Blunt, Bryan Cranston, Aaron Sorkin, Patrick Stewart, Jason Segel, Saoirse Ronan, Aziz Ansari, Felicity Huffman, William H. Macy, Sarah Silverman, Paul Dano, Gina Rodriguez, Matt LeBlanc, Joshua Jackson, Sarah Hyland, Tracee Ellis Ross, Anthony Anderson, Christian Slater, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Laura Prepon, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Fred Savage, Greg Grunberg, James Vanderbilt, Jean Smart, Rami Malek, Lisa Edelstein, Darby Stanchfield, Michael Shannon, Patricia Clarkson, Vanessa Hudgens, Jeremy Piven, Austin Butler and more.

And it’s possible all of those boldfaced name guests might have had to book another date to party, shake hands and promote their projects to HFPA members. Org president Lorenzo Soria tells THR that the HFPA considered canceling the event in the wake of the Paris tragedy, or altering the celebration to take a different tone. “We are an international organization with French members,” says Soria. “We are all in shock as citizens of the world, as Europeans. You don’t need to be French to know that this is big and affecting us all.”
On a lighter note, Soria praised the choice of Corinne Foxx as Miss Golden Globe. He says: “She’s talented, she’s beautiful, she’s adorable, she’s smart, she has good genes. In other words, she’s the perfect Miss Golden Globe.”
It won’t be Corinne’s first outing at the Golden Globes. She attended with her father in 2013, in addition to other major awards shows. And she has fun every single time. “We are always just goofing around, being star struck and nudging each other, like, ‘Oh my God look! It’s Brad Pitt!’ ” she laughs. As for who she hopes to see on Jan. 10, Corinne dishes, “I just saw Steve Jobs which is amazing and I like Scream Queens so I hope Emma Roberts is there. She’s so good on that show. I feel like she’s probably a really sweet girl but she kills it on that show. She’s so good.”
