Sony Pictures Entertainment has tapped Richard Berger as senior vp new media and technology.

Berger, who was promoted from senior director of the digital entertainment department at Sony Corp. of America, will collaborate with Mitch Singer, SPE's chief technology officer and executive vp new media and technology. Together, they will develop digital strategies and represent SPE's industrywide efforts to expand in the digital realm.

"Digital technology opens up a whole new world of opportunity for us, and Rich's wealth of knowledge can help us stay ahead of the competition in this complex and rapidly changing field," Singer said Wednesday in making the announcement.

Beyond his strategic work, Berger will be responsible for evaluating any SPE digital and cable agreements in terms of content-protection provisions, usage models and licensing agreements. He also will be a part of SPE's cross-divisional team, which deals with content protection and anti-piracy.

During Berger's tenure at Sony Corp. of America, he oversaw digital media strategy and anti-piracy efforts.

"Sony Pictures is at the crossroads of entertainment and technology, and I'm thrilled to be working with Mitch and everyone at the company to make sure we take maximum advantage of the enormous possibilities afforded by the digital era," Berger said.
