Berlin 2013: 'Cathedrals of Cultures' Sells Wide
Wim Wenders, James Marsh, Michael Glawogger, Michael Madsen and Karim Ainouz will direct segments of the series about great European buildings.
BERLIN -- Cathedrals of Cultures, the ambitious 3D documentary series that Pina director Wim Wenders is executive producing, has kicked off the European Film Market with a series of major pre-sales, with Cinephil and Neue Road Movies closing for nine territories, including Germany, Spain, Italy, Denmark and Australia.
The six 30-minute episodes in the Cathedrals series, which will be shot both in 3D and 2D, will each examine an iconic European building as a window into a society's culture. Wenders, Oscar-winning director James Marsh (Man on Wire), Danish filmmaker Michael Madsen (Into Eternity), Brazilian Karim Ainouz (Love for Sale) and Austrian director Michael Glawogger (Workingman's Death) will each helm an episode in the series. A sixth director will be named shortly.
The buildings the directors will depict include the Berlin Philharmonic in Berlin (Wenders); Halden Prison in Halden, Norway (Madsen); National Library in St. Petersburg, Russia (Glawogger); and St. Pancras Railway Station in London (Marsh). Ainouz is in negotiation on the building he will shoot for the series.
French-German public broadcaster ARTE is the main television partner on the Cathedrals project and will broadcast the series simultaneously in 3D and 2D in 2014.
Berlin's Neue Road Movie and German broadcaster RBB, Final Cut in Copenhagen and Les Films d'Ici 2 in Paris will co-produce.
Producers include Erwin M. Schmidt and Gian-Piero Ringel (producers on Pina), with Anne Kohncke, Signe Byrge, Charlotte Uzu and Richard Copans co-producing.
Cinephil is handling world sales for the project at the European Film Market.
