Filmmaker J.C. Chandor begins shooting the thriller on Wednesday. A week later, Glen Basner's FilmNation will introduce the high-profile indie project to foreign buyers for the first time at Berlin's European Film Market.
A24 Films has already secured U.S. rights, and is planning to release the movie this fall or winter, positioning it for a potential awards run.
A Most Violent Year is set in New York City during the winter of 1981, statistically one of the most violent years in the city's history. The story revolves around an American immigrant (Isaac) and his wife (Chastain) trying to expand their business as violence and corruption threaten to destroy all they have built.
Participant and Image Nation Abu Dhabi are co-financing the film, with Before the Door's Neal Dodson and Washington Square Films' Anna Gerb producing alongside Chandor (Dodson and Gerb also produced Chandor's All Is Lost and Margin Call). Executive producers include Participant's Jeff Skoll and Jonathan King, Joshua Blum, Kerry Orent and Basner.
Oyelowo (Jack Reacher) is repped by CAA, Inphenate, Hamilton-Hodell and attorney Ira Schreck.
