Berlin: 'Heidi' Sells Wide
StudioCanal has pre-sold its reboot of the children's classic across Europe.
StudioCanal has closed multiple pre-sales of its reboot of Swiss children's classic Heidi, with deals at Berlin's European Film Market for Italy, Turkey, Eastern Europe and Korea.
The production, which stars 10-year-old newcomer Anuk Steffens as Heidi alongside veteran actors Bruno Ganz (Downfall) and Katharina Schuttler (13 Minutes), will be the first German-language production StudioCanal will release across all its territories, in France, Germany, the U.K. and Australia/New Zealand.
StudioCanal, which is also handling worldsales on Heidi, pre-sold the title based on the script and a 3-minute promo it screened for buyers in Berlin. StudioCanal is co-producing Heidi together with Uli Putz and Jakob Claussen of Munich-based Claussen+Wobke+Putz Filmproduktion (Labyrinth of Lies) and Reto Schaerli and Lukas Hobi of Swiss shingle Zodiac Pictures (The Little Ghost).
The Alpine-set children's tale from Swiss author Johanna Spyri has been adapted several times for the screen, perhaps most famously in the 1937 film starring Shirley Temple as Heidi.
StudioCanal will release Heidi in Germany on Dec. 3.
