Berlin 2013: Magnolia Pictures Takes Lars Von Trier's 'Nymphomaniac'
Charlotte Gainsbourg, Stellan Skarsgard and Shia LaBoeuf star in the erotic epic.
BERLIN - Magnolia Pictures has yielded to temptation and taken U.S. rights to Lars Von Trier's erotic epic Nymphomaniac, acquiring the feature from sales group TrustNordisk after a closed market screening in Berlin of promo material from the first half of the film.
Conceived as two full-length features, Nymphomaniac follows the erotic adventures of Joe (Charlotte Gainsbourg), self-diagnosed nymphomaniac as she recounts them to the older bachelor Seligman (Stellan Skarsgard). Nymphomaniac features an all-star ensemble cast with such names as Shia LaBeouf, Jamie Bell, Christian Slater, Uma Thurman, Willem Dafoe and Connie Nielsen also featured.
The Nymphomaniac deal was negotiated between Peter van Steemburg and Dori Begley, Magnolia's Director of Acquisitions and SVP of Acquisitions respectively and TrustNordisk's CEO Rikke Ennis and Head of Sales Susan Wendt.
Magnolia released von Trier's last feature, Melancholia, which earned over $3 million in U.S. release. The indie distributor has been a regular buyer of TrustNordisk titles, with recent acquisitions including the Oscar-nominated A Royal Affair and Thomas Vinterberg's The Hunt.
"After the tremendous and never predictable experience of distributing Melancholia, we couldn’t be more excited to be working with Mr. von Trier again on the Nymphomaniac films," said Magnolia President Eamonn Bowles. "He’s such an exciting and talented filmmaker—it’s an honor and a thrill to be associated with his world.”
Von Trier is currently finishing post-production on Nymphomaniac for a 2013 release.
