Bernardo Bertolucci Cancels Mexico Festival Visit Due to Health Concerns
The legendary Italian director was a top-billed guest at the upcoming Guadalajara film fest.
Italian filmmaker Bernardo Bertolucci has canceled a scheduled visit to Mexico after he recently underwent a procedure for a coronary stent implant.
Bertolucci, who won best picture and director Oscars for The Last Emperor, said in a statement that after a routine office visit, his doctors determined that surgery was necessary.
The veteran director added that the recovery process has made it impossible to travel over the next several weeks, but he says he's doing well.
Italy is the guest country of honor at the 30th Guadalajara International Film Festival, which kicks off on Friday. The festival will feature retrospectives of the works of Bertolucci and Bruno Bozzetto.
Actors Tea Falco and Jacopo Olmo Antinori, stars of the Bertolucci coming-of-age drama Me and You, will be in Guadalajara to receive an achievement award on Bertolucci's behalf.
