'Best of Enemies' to Open AFI Docs
'Mavis!' will serve as the closing night film.
Robert Gordon and Morgan Neville’s Best of Enemies has been selected to open AFI Docs, the American Film Institute’s annual documentary film festival, which will run June 17-21 in Washington, D.C. Jessica Edwards’ Mavis! will serve as the closing-night film.
Best of Enemies, from Magnolia Pictures, focuses on the contentious debates between William F. Buckley, Jr. and Gore Vidal at the 1968 Democratic Convention. The opening-night gala will take place at the Newseum.
Mavis!, from HBO, is a portrait of gospel and soul-music legend Mavis Staples and will screen at the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery.
"We are delighted to present these exceptional films to open and close this year’s festival," Michael Lumpkin, director of AFI Docs, said. "Best of Enemies and Mavis! both feature remarkable people who have made a mark on this country. These films will certainly inspire audience dialogue while providing great entertainment, both of which we embrace at AFI Docs."
