He started off dressed in a suit with oversized shoulder and knee pads before stripping that away and also entertained the crowd with some of his signature dance moves.
Going into Sunday night's show, Brown led all nominees with mentions in six categories. So far, he has won best male R&B artist and best collaboration for "Look at Me Now" with Lil Wayne and Busta Rhymes.

Last year, Brown performed a tribute to his idol, the late Michael Jackson, during which he broke down in tears. Many questioned whether those emotions were sincere at the time.
The scandal-prone singer has had a rough couple of years. Just last week, he retreated from comments in which he used the word "gay" as an insult.
Earlier this year, Brown was forced to apologize after he destroyed a dressing room once he stormed off the Good Morning America set during an interview with Robin Roberts.

Brown also is still under a restraining order that forbids him from annoying, harassing or stalking his ex-girlfriend Rihanna, whom he beat on the night of the Grammy Awards in 2009.
The BET Awards show is airing live on BET from the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. Comedian Kevin Hart is the host.
