BET Awards 2014: Lionel Richie's Name Misspelled During Telecast
The Lifetime Achievement Award honoree took the stage with a caption reading "Lionel Ritchie."
The 2014 BET Awards spent a good chunk of its telecast honoring Lionel Richie, but there was one tiny problem when he took the stage to be honored.
A caption for the Lifetime Achievement Award honoree spelled his name as "Lionel Ritchie." Soon after, a hashtag of the misspelling, #lionelritchie, started trending on Twitter.
"@LionelRichie's name better not be misspelled on the actual award," tweeted one viewer.
Before taking the stage, Richie was treated to performances of his songs by artists such as John Legend and Yolanda Adams. Pharrell Williams presented the award to Richie, who thanked Barry Gordy and noted that before many of his songs were hits, he was warned they would "ruin his career."
"Soul is a feeling, not a color," Richie said. "Talent is a God-given gift and not a category. Out of the box is that magical place where talent — pure talent — goes to live and thrive and breath. And may you never give that up as long as you're in this business."
The telecast also misspelled Iggy Azalea's name early in the show.
I love after BET misspelled Lionel Richie, all the tweets started misspelling his name too.— KALI KUNT (@BlacKenGod) June 30, 2014
