Bier's 'Better World' Danish Oscar contender
Mediation on violence and pacifism set in Africa, EuropeZURICH – Susanne Bier's "In a Better World," a mediation on violence and pacifism set in Africa and Europe, is Denmark's contender for the 2011 Foreign Language Oscar.
Bier's melodrama "After the Wedding" received an Oscar nomination in 2007. She went on to direct "Things We Lost in the Fire" starring Halle Berry and Benicio de Toro. Last year, Jim Sheridan directed an English-language remake of her 2004 drama "Brothers" starring Tobey Maguire, Natalie Portman and Jake Gyllenhaal.
Sony Pictures Classics has picked up "In a Better World" for domestic release, with a bow in the U.S. and Canada planned for early 2011.
