Bill Maher is making headlines after he joked about an assassination attempt on Donald Trump.

The HBO host and satirist made the quip about the GOP presidential nominee Sunday while speaking at the DAR Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C.

“I’m nervous with this election. And I saw the headline today: 'Race tightening, Trump ahead in Ohio and Florida'. If this race is even the week before the election, somebody is going to have to go out there..." Maher said, trailing off to applause and laughter. "Why do you think they let Hinckley out?" he added.

Maher was referencing John Hinckley Jr., who attempted to assassinate President Ronald Reagan in the early 1980s in an effort to, in his mind, impress a Hollywood actress. Hinckley was recently released from a mental hospital to live with his mother.

Maher, while on the topic, also mentioned "Second Amendment people," a comment Trump got in hot water for when he insinuated during a rally that his supporters might have to use force to stop Clinton.
