'Billy Elliot' to make Canadian premiere

Tony-winning musical to hit Toronto in early 2011

TORONTO -- The Tony Award-winning "Billy Elliot" musical will make its Canadian premiere in Toronto.

Toronto live theatre producer Mirvish Productions unveiled a deal with Universal Pictures Stage Productions, Working Title Films and Old Vic Productions to bring the screen-to-stage adaptation of Stephen Daldry's 2000 indie hit to Toronto beginning February 2011.

Daldry's original dancing drama about the son of a miner moving from the boxing ring to the ballet stage screened at the 2000 Toronto International Film Festival after festival dates in Cannes and Edinburgh.

"Billy Elliot the Musical," featuring music by Elton John and directed by Stephen Daldry, has already played in London, New York and Australia.

No word on casting.
