Carlos Santana, Martina Arroyo and Herbie Hancock will also be recognized at the Dec. 29 event.
Billy Joel, Shirley MacLaine, Carlos Santana, Herbie Hancock and Martina Arroyo will be honored at the 36th annual Kennedy Center Honors, which will air on CBS on Sunday, Dec. 29 from 9-11 p.m.
The honorees, who will be seated with President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama, will be saluted by performers from Hollywood and the arts.
“The Kennedy Center celebrates five extraordinary individuals who have spent their lives elevating the cultural vibrancy of our nation and the world,” said Kennedy Center chairman David M. Rubenstein.
“In addition to recognizing some of the world’s most treasured artists, the Kennedy Center Honors supports a wide variety of artistic programming, as well as the center’s educational and national outreach efforts," said Kennedy Center president Michael M. Kaiser.
The Obamas will receive the honorees, along with the members of the artists committee and the Kennedy Center board of trustees, at the White House before the gala performance taping that will take place Dec. 8. The gala ends with a supper dance at the Grand Foyer.
The Kennedy Center Honors recognizes people who have made lifetime contributions to American culture through the performing arts, in dance, music, theater, opera, film or TV, and are chosen by the Kennedy Center's board of trustees.
George Stevens Jr. and Michael Stevens, who have won four Emmys, will produce and write the Kennedy Center Honors special, which has also been awarded the Peabody.
