'Birdman' Takes Top Prize at Australian Academy's International Awards

'Birdman' won a total of four awards at an L.A. ceremony hosted by Nicole Kidman and Geoffrey Rush.

Australians love Birdman — or at least the 140 voting members of the international chapter of the Australian Academy of  Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) do.

Birdman won four of seven categories at the AACTA International Awards — handed out as part of the G’Day USA Gala in Los Angeles on Saturday night — including best film, best director for Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, best screenplay and best actor for Michael Keaton.

The film, also known as The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance, beat out top other nominees Boyhood and The Imitation Game for best picture, both of which had received five AACTA International nominations each.

Mirroring her Golden Globe and SAG Awards wins for her performance in Still Alice, Julianne Moore picked up the AACTA International Award for Best Actress.

Similarly to Moore, Golden Globe and SAG Award winners J.K. Simmons (Whiplash) and Patricia Arquette (Boyhood) each picked up statuettes for the AACTA International Award for best supporting actor and actress, respectively.

This year's awards were hosted by Aussie veterans Nicole Kidman and AACTA president Geoffrey Rush. They are held annually in L.A. and aim to recognize film excellence regardless of geography. The awards, now in their fourth year, are organized by the Australian Film Institute and coincide with the annual AACTA Awards in Australia.

Those awards were handed out Thursday in Sydney, with Russell Crowe'sThe Water Diviner and Jennifer Kent's The Babadook tying for best film.
