‘Black Swan’ Lashes
How the dark thriller’s makeup artist created three showstopping looks.
And the winner for best dramatic lashes is … . In the psychological thriller Black Swan, which nabbed five Oscar nominations Jan. 25, Natalie Portman’s Nina floats from corps de ballet dancer to Swan Queen to Black Swan, and with each transformation, her lashes adapt. “For her glamorous evening look, I focused on enhancing Natalie’s natural lashes,” says makeup artist Margie Durand, who applied Kanebo Sensai Mascara 38°C in black to Portman’s upper and lower lashes. “I used the same Sensai mascara as a base for all of her dance scenes because it holds up well against tears and perspiration — it doesn’t smudge.” For the delicate Swan Queen, Durand added faux lashes by Make Up For Ever to the actress’ doe eyes for a full but floaty look, and for the dark, sensuous Black Swan, she chose the hard-edged MAC 42 Lash, a set of natural-hair lashes that are dense at the lash line but gradually lengthen into an unbalanced array of wisps and clusters. The result? Total drama.
