Blockbuster eyeing Movielink
EmptyBlockbuster Inc. is in "advanced" talks to acquire online movie distributor Movielink Llc., according to the Wall Street Journal.
The video-rental giant reportedly is offering $50 million for Movielink, which is owned by a consortium of film studios including Paramount Pictures, Sony Pictures Entertainment and Universal Studios. Movielink would give Blockbuster a toehold on the Internet at a time when multiple brands have been making movies available for rental online, including Wal-Mart, Amazon, Apple and BitTorrent.
Representatives for Blockbuster and Movielink declined comment.
Movielink has been a constant source of acquisition speculation during the past few years, and Blockbuster previously emerged on a list of candidates to make the purchase.
Launched in 2002, Movielink was the first Web site to allow legal downloads of movies from major studios.
