Bollywood Movie Mimics 'The Great Gatsby' (Video)
Opulent costumes, riotous party scenes and Indian actor Himesh Reshammiya doing his best Leonardo DiCaprio -- the similarities between the Indian film and Baz Luhrmann's vision of the jazz age are indeed conspicuous.
"The Baz Age" has made its way to the Indian subcontinent.
The recently released trailer for upcoming Bollywood film The Xpose reveals a conspicuous debt to Baz Luhrmann's recent big screen adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby.
Colorful flapper costumes, extravagant party scenes and Indian star Himesh Reshammiya striking several distinctly Leonardo DiCaprio-esque poses, many of the set pieces in the upcoming Indian film appear directly lifted from Luhrmann's extravagantly decadent film.
Local Indian paper The Mumbai Mirror called the film's director Anant Mahadevan to challenge him over the similarities.
"If you look at the Bollywood of the 1960s, it was heavily inspired by what Hollywood looked like in the 1950s which is the premise of my film," said Mahadevan.
When The Mirror pointed out the anachronism -- The Great Gatsby takes place in the 1920s -- the director said: "Look, Bollywood and its stars copied the West, lock, stock and barrel, and that is what we have tried to reflect through our film. The affluence, the grandeur and the larger-than-life celebrations were emulated without a second thought."
"If you say it looks like The Great Gatsby, then I'd consider it an honorable comparison," he added.
The Xpose is due out in India on May 23. It's one of the more anticipated titles of the spring.
