NEW DELHI -- Bollywood star Sanjay Dutt was released from jail Thursday after being granted interim bail granted by India's Supreme Court early this week.

Dutt was given a six-year jail sentence July 31 after a special anti-terrorism court found him guilty of acquiring guns from key plotters of the 1993 Mumbai blasts that killed 257 people. The Supreme Court bail is seen as a temporary relief since the July judgment is being challenged by Dutt's lawyers.

Once the New Delhi court receives the decision from the Mumbai-based TADA Court (Terrorists and Disruptive Activities Prevention Act) -- expected over the next week -- Dutt will be required to surrender and could go back to jail as the case goes to trial following his appeal for bail. Until then, he is expected to report to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court in Mumbai once a week.

Television networks carried live coverage of a smiling Dutt shaking hands with police officials as he left a high-security prison in the western city of Pune from which he boarded a chartered flight to return home to Mumbai.

Born to the late Bollywood veteran star couple, Sunil Dutt and actress Nargis, Dutt, has had a string of hits in recent years and industry estimates reckon that about $12 million worth of upcoming productions are riding on him.
