'Book of Mormon' Smashes House Record at L.A.'s Pantages Theatre
The Tony-winning musical grossed more than $2.2 million in the week ending Oct. 21, setting a new high for an eight-performance stint at the West Coast playhouse.
After shattering house records a total of 41 times since it opened on Broadway, The Book of Mormon is now showing similar muscle on tour. The show grossed $2,246,093 for the week ending Oct. 21 at the Pantages Theatre, setting a new high for a standard eight-performance schedule in Los Angeles.
The touring production kicked off Aug. 14 in Denver and touched down for a limited 12-week L.A. engagement beginning Sept. 5. Following a week of previews, the show had its official opening Sept. 12.
The Book of Mormon has played to sellout houses at Broadway's Eugene O'Neill Theatre since opening there in March 2011. Still one of the toughest-to-get tickets in New York, the show broke the O'Neill house record for the 41st time on Oct. 7, with a gross for that week of $1,668,832.
A buddy comedy about two clueless Mormon missionaries plucked from Utah and dumped in the eye-opening new surroundings of a Ugandan village plagued by war, AIDS and famine, the show was written by the South Park team of Trey Parker and Matt Stone, with Avenue Q composer Robert Lopez.
It won nine Tony Awards, including best musical, original score, book and direction. Both the Broadway and touring productions were co-directed by Casey Nicholaw and Parker.
