Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie Dazzle at Cannes ‘Life’ Premiere
They officially debut the buzzed-about Terrence Malick in France.
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie dazzled at the official premiere of Terrence Malick’s The Tree of Life Monday evening at the Cannes Film Festival.
Jolie stunned in a chocolate brown strapless dress.
Other stars who walked the red carpet included newcomer Jessica Chastain (who plays Pitt’s wife in the movie), actor Sean Penn (who plays a Pitt’s grown-up son), as well as Zoe Saldana, Rob Lowe and Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossale, who are friends of Jolie and Pitt.
The notoriously reclusive Malick was not photographed.
The movie, a 138-minute meditation on the meaning of life, has received mixed responses.
With the film’s final, ambiguous image still lingering on the screen, a number of vociferous boos rained down from the balcony during a screening early Monday, while scattered applause broke out on the floor of the festival’s main theater.
Tree of Life, which debuts in the U.S. May 27, has a dense script, but Pitt told reporters Malick left each day of shooting open so he could explore whatever chance might send his way.
"He never wanted to, what we call, hammer-and-tong a scene as it's written," Pitt said. "He was more interested in capturing what was happening on the day. He's like a guy standing there with a butterfly net and waiting for that moment of truth to go by."
