CANNES -- An unusually eclectic slate of programs has been nominated for International Emmys by the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. The selections were unveiled Monday in Cannes during the MIPCOM trade show.

There are 38 nominees in nine categories, including a mention for the controversial British film "Death of a President," which depicted an assassination of President Bush. It is nominated in the TV movie/miniseries category alongside three other entries, including TV Globo's television version of the Brazil's feature "Antonia" -- about four young Brazilian women forming a hip-hop group -- which recently was released in the U.S.

The shortlist of nominees spans 16 countries with a record seven noms for Brazil, four for Japan and three for South Africa. This also is the first time that Colombia has been nominated. The Latin American country landed a nom in the documentary category for RCN's "In God's Hands"; its competition includes BBC Scotland's "Stephen Fry -- The Secret Life of the Manic Depressive," about the British comedian's life with bipolar disorder.

As usual in the 35 years of the accolades, the Brits fared well, with the BBC and Granada each fielding several entries.

BBC's "How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria," a talent search for the lead in the latest West End production of "The Sound of Music" -- which spawned NBC's reality series "Grease: You're the One That I Want" -- was nominated in the unscripted series category.

Additionally, BBC1's drama "The Street," from Granada TV, earned two nominations, one for best drama series and one for best actor Jim Broadbent.

"Street" was one of two series to land multiple nominations, the other being South Africa's "Home Affairs," recognized for best drama and best actress Brenda Ngxoli.

The nomination process included three rounds of judging over a period of six months, with participation from more than 500 judges in 35 countries. Winners will be announced at a gala ceremony Nov. 19 in New York.

"The International Emmy is the pre-eminent award to recognize creative and production achievements in the international television community." International TV academy president and CEO Bruce Paisner said. "No other award or event presents such a global showcase for excellence in television programming."

In addition to the presentation of the International Emmys for programming, the International TV academy will present the Founders Award to Al Gore for his role in launching Current TV and his ongoing effort to alert the world to global warming and the Directorate Award to Patrick Le Lay, chairman of France's TF1.
