American Contestant Alma Thomas Dominates Battle Round on Brazil's 'The Voice'

After three weeks of battle rounds, Brazil’s The Voice (The Voice Brasil) sent home 12 contestants, with 36 singers continuing on as the reality competition tried to find the new voice of the country.

Among the contestants moving forward is New York native Alma Thomas -- who impressed the coaches during her first audition with a performance of Adele's "Someone Like You."

On Sunday's episode, Thomas performed the song "Fato Consumado" by Brazilian singer Djavan, opposite her fellow contestant Dani Morais.

The duo wowed all four coaches once again. Thomas's coach Daniel said of the singer: "I think Alma is Brazilian" [the word alma in Portuguese means soul, so Daniel meant to say that Thomas' soul is Brazilian as well].

Despite the fact that Thomas has a slight American accent -- which worried coach Daniel at the beginning of the competition -- he chose to keep the New York native saying: "I will go with my Alma today, I am going to stick with Alma."

Coach Caludia Leitte favored Thomas saying: "I liked it a lot, it's your identity in the music, it's very important that you performed with security, I was moved by the chemistry of you two together," says Leitte.

"In reality I feel that I am Brazilian, and I am thankful for being acknowledge that," said Thomas in tears at the end of her battle.

The 29-year-old songstress told The Hollywood Reporter that she got onto the singing competition after receiving a phone call from the producers.

"They said it was a recommendation from someone who probably had seen one of my shows or had listened to one of my CDs," she said.

The mother of two started her music career in Brazil about eight years ago, after getting married to a Brazilian man while vacationing in Rio de Janeiro.

The singer had never audiotined before. "I’ve never done anything scary like that," she said of participating in the show.

Thomas made a controversial decision by selecting Daniel -- a country singer -- over the others to be her coach.

"I think that all artists are very sensitive, we have something in common with our personality," she said adding: "Also, I really like the way he conducts his business, he is a really good professional."

The singer also told THR that if she was a contestant on U.S. version of The Voice, she would like to be in Christina Aguilera's team. "I grew up listening to her, so it would be great to have her as my mentor."

Despite that, Thomas points out that she doesn't plan to move back to the U.S. if she becomes a famous singer in Brazil. "I am in immigrant, my home is here in Brazil," she said.

Starting on Nov. 11, the next phase of the music competition will feature live performances and the audience can vote to keep the contestants they want to remain in the show. During the first live show, 12 contestants (three from each team) will perform. Each coach saves one contestant and the audience saves another. The last contestant will be eliminated.
