Bromstad courting British biz
NBC Uni int'l production head in partnership, acquisition talksAngela Bromstad, NBC Universal's London-based international production head, wants to do business with British producers and is in talks with several outfits here about production partnerships and acquisitions possibilities.
Bromstad, who has an investment pot totaling several hundred million dollars to fund a range of international investments, is looking at options in the British production sector and in Europe. These could include setting up partnerships, joint-venture acquisitions or buying local production businesses in such markets as the U.K., Germany and Eastern Europe.
Her first major deal here was with Kudos Prods. and ITV to create "Law & Order: London," scheduled to air this year, and she is in talks about similar deals with other indies. Weekend newspaper reports suggested that NBC Uni could put together a takeover bid for All3Media, one of the U.K.'s biggest production shingles.
"We are looking at all sorts of options," an NBC Uni spokeswoman said, declining comment on All3Media, which was acquired by Permira two years ago for about $700 million. "Angela is building up the growth area of her business, which is television production, and it is very exciting because she is starting from scratch."
Earlier, NBC Uni International president Pete Smith reiterated his expansion plans.
"We want to go into two or three fast-growing emerging markets — and a couple of existing mature markets where we already have a presence — that are big enough to be meaningful to us. The U.K. and Germany come to mind," he told the Sunday Telegraph newspaper. "Increasingly, the vast majority of content on television is locally produced, so it makes a lot of sense to take a position locally." (partialdiff)
