Bruce Jenner, Kardashians Get Emotional Over His Gender Transition in E! Special
Sunday night's special "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" showed viewers his family's reaction to his revelation.
A special episode of Keeping Up With the Kardashians, titled "About Bruce," finally gave more insight into how Bruce Jenner's kids reacted to his gender transition.
Jenner's 20/20 interview with Diane Sawyer last month focused on his side of the story and featured his first four kids: Burt, Casey, Brandon and Brody. Sunday night's special, filmed in January, focused on the reactions of his daughters Kendall and Kylie; stepdaughters Kourtney, Kim and Khloe; and ex-wife Kris (stepson Robert did not participate). It kicked off with Khloe taking Bruce a present — four pairs of high-heeled shoes — which got Bruce emotional.
"I don't know her taste yet, so I'm trying to figure that out," Khloe tell him. He response: "To be honest with you, I don't know her taste yet either, but … without even opening these, do you know how nice this is and how much I appreciate this?"
Later, Kendall shows up and the two end up grilling him about his transition, mostly over what they feel is a lack of communication and forthrightness on Bruce's part.
"Shouldn't Kendall and Kylie have the opportunity to say goodbye?" Khloe asks him. "I'm not going anywhere," he says, to which she responds: "It's not the same person. Even you said she had a different personality."
A later conversation with Kim results in more revelations that she says she didn't know, including his planned interview with Sawyer. He also tells her he will fully become a women likely this year, which surprises Kim.
"I think what hurts," Kim tells him, "is when we hear things are changing and happening and we don't know about it. We just want to be in the loop." He replies: "I've had secrets all my life; it's tough not to have secrets."
He also shows off his pedicure, which he'd done himself and admitted he'd done for years, hiding his feet under socks so nobody would know.
Later on, Bruce, Kim, Kourtney, Khloe, Kylie and Kendall gather to discuss his transition in a discussion that gets heated and emotional in which the women admit they don't feel like they are getting the full story from him. They express surprise to learn the extent of his planning, including a nose job and upper lip left he'd kept secret (they'd suspected the former), plus upcoming surgeries on his forehead and jaw. He also admitted he'd been out in public — like to the movies — as a woman and said his style is "good old jeans and sweaters" and said he'd worn wigs in the past. He also said getting haircuts had been a very "traumatic" experience for him: "I can't take that, OK, I want my hair to be long but society says you have to cut it because you're a guy," he admits in a confessional.
Khloe, in particular, seems to take all the revelation the hardest, feeling as if he's been planning this behind his family's backs.
Kris also appears in part of the special, including a sit-down with Kim.
"It's hard for me to just really believe it's happening," Kris admits, adding: "I want him to be happy, but my biggest concern is, are you guys [his kids] OK. It's like, I'm not OK. I don't know how to handle this. This is my life. I committed to this life and I think that he just backed out."
She also admits to being hurt that Bruce hadn't been more honest with her. "I have memories of this life, and sometimes I feel like it didn't exist," she says.
The special also featured revelations from Kim, Kendall, Khloe and others about how they'd caught him dressed up in women's clothes when they were all young. "I feel bad," Kendall says in her confessional interview. "If that's what makes you happy, and you had to sneak around at 4 a.m. because you didn't want to scare me and Kylie?"
Admits Bruce: "I don't think I've ever been as scared in my life as I was to be extraordinarily honest with my kids."
Adds Khloe of her frustration with his lack of communication about his timeline: "I want Bruce to do what's best for him, but you couldn't have given us a little more time?"
And Kendall adds: "I'm more worried about how people are going to treat him … because he is honestly one of the greatest people I know. He wouldn't hurt a fly. So to thin of someone giving him hate or not being OK with who he wants to be and what makes him happy, that scares me and it's more of a worry to me than anything else."
The special also featured home movies from his days as an Olympian and his wedding to Kris, along with the early days of their marriage.
Part 2 of "About Bruce" airs Monday night.
