BSkyB joins U.K. copyright protection trust

Joins more than 30 members from film, TV industries

LONDON -- BSkyB has signed up to join U.K. copyright protection body the Industry Trust for IP Awareness, which campaigns for cross-industry approaches to combat illegal downloading, it was announced Wednesday.

Sky will lend its support to the Trust's campaign to promote the issues of copyright abuse and will join a group of more than 30 members from the distribution and exhibition sectors of the film and television industry.

Illegal downloading is thought to cost the British film and television industry more than £500 million ($825 million) per year.

"Sky is committed to promoting awareness of the value of the creative industry and the detrimental impact of copyright theft," said Michael Barley, director of security at BSkyB.

"The partnership with the Industry Trust will help us raise awareness of the challenges facing the audiovisual industry from illegal downloading and file-sharing of films and television programs."
