BSkyB Names Adam MacDonald Director of Sky 1
He will take over the U.K. pay TV giant's flagship channel and also oversee Sky 2 later this year.
LONDON - BSkyB said Wednesday that it has appointed Adam MacDonald to the role of director, Sky 1 HD.
He will take over the U.K. pay TV giant's flagship channel and also oversee Sky 2 later this year following Stuart Murphy’s recent elevation to an expanded role, which put him in charge of all of BSkyB's entertainment channels. Those networks are Sky 1, Sky Living, Sky Atlantic, Sky Arts, Challenge and Pick TV.
MacDonald currently is vp of programming, A+E Networks UK, a joint venture of A+E Networks and BSkyB. In that role, he has been responsible for programming strategy and production for the History, Crime & Investigation Network, Bio and Military History channels in the U.K. Africa, Middle East and other key European territories.
His start date wasn't immediately specified. Sky 1 has been at the heart of BSkyB’s commitment to invest $ (£600 million) a year in U.K. content and production across all its channels by 2014.
Said Murphy: "He’s an ideal appointment - not only has he already run History to great success, but he shares our values of excellence and fun."
MacDonald said that "Stuart and his team of commissioners have been producing an exceptional slate of programs over the last few years. It will be an honor to be working with them and together taking Sky 1 to even greater heights."
During his time in charge of History, ratings increased by 75 percent. Prior to that, MacDonald was creative director, IWC Media, where he executive produced Iron Chef UK for Channel 4 and Wreck or Ready for BBC One. MacDonald has also served as controller of daytime and digital factual at ITV.
Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. owns a 39 percent stake in BSkyB.
