BSkyB Web-Only Service Launches Package of 10 Entertainment Channels
LONDON – U.K. pay TV giant BSkyB said Tuesday that its online-only service Now TV is starting to offer 10 entertainment channels on a monthly pay-as-you-go basis.
The new Now TV Entertainment Month Pass offers Sky 1, Sky Atlantic, which features HBO hit shows such as Game of Thrones, Sky Living, Sky Arts 1, Discovery, MTV, Comedy Central, Gold, Disney Channel and Fox content live and on demand on a pay-as-you-go basis.
The service launches with an introductory price of $8 (£4.99) per month.
“Millions of people can now go online to watch some of the best entertainment channels, including Sky 1, Sky Atlantic and Comedy Central," said Gidon Katz, director of Now TV. "Now TV offers pay-as-you-go access to brand new episodes of home-grown British shows and the biggest and best U.S. series for anyone with broadband."
Now TV has been seen as a way for BSkyB to attract people who don't want to pay for a full-service pay TV service and to compete with Netflix.
"Internet TV usage is growing rapidly with millions of homes already using the web to watch their favorite shows and channels," said BSkyB, in which Rupert Murdoch's 21st Century Fox owns a 39 percent stake. "Unlike some other streaming services, the Now TV Entertainment Month Pass offers premiere episodes of the very latest series, including brand new drama and comedy from home and abroad."
In addition to current shows from the networks, including The Walking Dead, the new service package will offer seasons of older shows, such as all five seasons of The Wire (Sky Atlantic) and seasons one to three of An Idiot Abroad (Sky 1) and Mad Dogs (Sky 1).
