Freydank wrote, directed and produced the film, which stars German actor Axel Prahl in the lead role. It tells the story of a man's "metamorphosis," to use an expression from Kafka, in a rapidly changing and increasingly isolated world.

The film is produced by Mephisto Film, with Beta Cinema handling world sales and Neue Visionen Filmverleih handling the theatrical release in Germany. Kafka's The Burrow was funded by Saarmedien, the German Federal Film Fund (DFFF) and nordmedia in cooperation with ARTE, SR and BR.
